    You can just omit the timestamp parameter from the get command to receive the boat info only.

    I suppose it could be done. Excel 2013 has two new functions called webservice and filterxml which you could probably use to pull boat.xml into Excel and display what you want.

    What you see as the AIS function of the NMEA proxy is really nothing more than one more way of receiving some of the very same information that the server sends to the race client over an unencrypted TCP connection. The NMEA proxy just delivers that information in a different format, namely in NMEA sentences.

    Not everybody has to rely on the proxy to get to that data. So, as was intended, the NMEA proxy levels the playing field, more than anything, because now that information is available to all, and not just to those who know where to look.

    You misunderstand the option in the NMEA proxy; it is not intended to cutoff your boat to the outside world, but rather to control how much information the proxy receives. You have to realize that the NMEA proxy is only a nice wrapper around data that is available to anyone with basic TCP networking knowledge.

    Can't comment on the fonts issue as I am not using Chrome. As for the circles, they only appear if you have wind barbs selected in the Options.

    Not sure what you mean with 'quircer'? Does that mean BWR is working? If it is, you have to use a different COM port for QtVlm. Both can't be using the same COM port.

    In NavMonPc, on the "Virtual Ports A,B,C" tab, for each port there's a Monitor button just below the Connect/Disconnect buttons. Click on the Monitor button of your COM port to check and see if thge NMEA data is being output.

    Also, as I recall, NavMonPc's AIS proximity alert tends to wreck havoc on QtVlm. The alert usually gets activated just after start up. Click on AIS in the menubar and if there's an alert active, there'll will be a bunch of yellow boxes near the page bottom. Click on Ignore Target to cancel the alarm.

    Not much else I can think of, I'm afraid.

Halifax to Hooper Bay 2024

And now it’s Autumn in the Arctic, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. Having receded all summer, ice is starting to return to the numerous straits and bays of Canada’s North West Passage. High time then to set off on our last leg of the High Latitudes Series from Halifax in Nova Scotia to Alaska’s Hooper Bay. It’s 3850nm and we need to hurry, so we’ll take the Pelagic 77!

The Beagle in Tahiti 2024


Leaving the Galapagos behind, the course was west again, and by November 15th the Beagle reached Tahiti. Like Gauguin, sixty years later, Darwin found the natives, recently Christianized, pleasant and intelligent, but unlike Gauguin, this did not persuade him or his captain, Fitzroy, to tarry long. Let’s have a sail-around in 2024 anyway; 640nm, as ever in the Class B Tall Ship HMS Beagle.
