    For the last couple of months I've been using a Samsung Chromebook. Finally got around to trying the HTML client in the last few days. My computer is running Chrome Version 79.0.3945.119, Official Build (64 bit). For the most part I like the new client, but I have a couple of things that bug me.
    Mainly the weather slider seems a bit too complex where the weather is loaded in 2 hours to 6 hour increments.
    Also I can't seem to get the scroll keys to control the slider in in anything but full auto-play. In the flash client I can easily click on the the slider and and run through the full weather download in 10 minute increments just by using the scroll keys. It would be nice to be able to do the same in the new client.
    So far...great work, Devs.

    Thanks..I thought it was weird that the home page would load, but the races wouldn't, guess I'll just go to bed and hope to wake up later.

    When I tried to go to any active race I get this notice. "The server returned an error. If this problem persists please contact the administrators."

    Some of you like me may have noticed a change in how Chrome handles Flash. If you use Chrome browser, when you open chrome and then go to open a race you get a small banner that says something like "this site requires flash" click to install Flash Player. You then have to click an "allow" button.
    In digging around Google I found:

    Seeing has how the SOL Race Engine runs on Flash., how is this going to effect us after next year?

    Me too...of course I always do SOL SOTP. Sir Robin did not have GRIB files nor routing software. He did have a wind vane and the Atkin's design could be trimmed to hold a wind angle course. Don't know if any of the Original GGR boats had one but the old Tiller Master were popular 40~50 years ago.

    The Tiller Master was easy to use and easy to fix. Usually the only thing that broke was the feed-back cord, a replacement could be made with whipping cord. In Baja once I found a screen door spring that worked to replace a broken spring. It could hold a better course than any deck ape in all but the very roughest conditions.
    They did have shortwave radio, so they could get time for navigation and weather info and warnings from WWV, WWVH and similar stations in Europe and Australia.
    I challenge skippers like Kipper, rafa, bonknhoot, rumskib,Sadlersailing, longreacher, kenza, etc. to put down the routing software and join us SOTP sailors. That could be interesting. :-)

    "For the past several years, we’ve moved toward a more secure web by strongly advocating that sites adopt HTTPS encryption. And within the last year, we’ve also helped users understand that HTTP sites are not secure by gradually marking a larger subset of HTTP pages as “not secure”. Beginning in July 2018 with the release of Chrome 68, Chrome will mark all HTTP sites as “not secure”.

    That's only 5 months away. I use chrome a lot, especially for SOL. They will probably run a notice that the site is not secure and ask if you want to proceed. Still it could be a nuisance if one is in a hurry to change course to avoid BBQ.
    I'm not a coder so I don't really know what it takes to switch addresses. Just think it might be important.

    I have a hard time reading the polar graphs presented in the "how to be disqualified" page. I had thought to look at brainaid's tools for a more detailed look. But, alas...Brain says I must be registered in the race to see the polar.
    Why can't we just see text file polars? There must be some somewhere, how else do the folks who use routers load the polar files to decide which boat to use?

Welcome to the Shorthanded Sailing Association of New Zealand's 2025 Evolution Sails Northern Triangle series, and to this first leg of c 150nm, out of Auckland, north up the coast to Mangonui. In our Sailonline boathouse, our Young 11 has remained forever young. She is your boat of choice for the series, and we fully expect her to give the boats of today in the real-life SSANZ fleet a proper run for their money. The second and third race of the Triangle will start in full sync with the real fleet, so be aware that these start times will not be confirmed until after 60% of the real fleet have finished the prior leg!

Cape Horn TIMED Resupply 2025

Word has reached Puerto William that supplies are needed 172nm away for some RTW yachtsmen sheltering inshore near Noir Island. SOLers respond in their Pelagic 77s and race against the clock to deliver grog and vittles in this TIMED race!!! Which route will be quicker - inland or inshore? Make as many trips as you like!! This is a TIMED race, so you may RE-REGISTER HERE to try again, after finishing a run. You will have 13 days and 11 hours to test your skill and decision making after the race opens.

Auckland to Noumea 2025


The ARCH competition is transitioning now from the Arabian Sea to the Pacific Ocean, featuring a 1000 nm route from Auckland to Nouméa. Organized by the Royal Akarana Yacht Club, the race last occurred in 2018 and was set to resume on May 25, 2024, after a lengthy hiatus. However, due to political unrest in New Caledonia, the event has been cancelled. Fortunately, those situations do not impact our virtual race, so prepare your Open 60 for another exciting adventure.

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Dondra to Toamasina


Above you see a stratospheric balloon, that if only we had gribs at that altitude would get blasted along quite rapidly and predictably. Alas we just have our SOL balloon that sails rather lower to the sea and that we have crossed the Atlantic in, west to east, last year for the first time in the southern hemisphere. So much fun was had by all, that this year we will attempt the Indian Ocean, but in four legs. Another great piece of fiction, the voyages of Sinbad By Balloon not magic carpet, although you may need a bit of magic to make any progress at times. Pack your wicker basket full for your first leg of at least 2300nm from Sri Lanka to Madagascar; it’s not a picnic hamper, you could be in the air for longer than you hoped!

Barbados to Tristan da Cunha 2025

Sailonline is proud to present to our virtual sailors, an all new series RWW 2025 (Round our Water World). Sailing from remote island to remote island with forever only a faintly curving line between sea and sky on the horizon. "Dry land is not a myth". The series ranking uses best 7 from 8 races for scoring, and this first race, from Barbados to Tristan da Cunha, a 4000nm leg into the Southern Atlantic, will be sailed in ex-Volvo OD65s (version 3). The race is also part of the OCCH 2025, ranking best 10 from 12 races.
