Board » Technical Support » Minor Beta update 23 May

While we hope to promote the betas status soon - I have made a few additions that should help with steering and DCs
You can turn off the steering visuals if you prefer, in the Options (Disable Steering Hints)

1) The TWA input box will fill with either red or green to indicate which tack that TWA would be on. You can click anywhere just outside the TWA input box to revert the colour to white.
2) You can now enter TWA by specifying the tack explicitly. For example, instead of '-45' you could specify '45 Port' instead. Of course, you can still enter -45. If you specify a tack, then any sign is ignored - '-45 Port' is still 45 to Port. Actually only the first letter is used to determine port/starboard, so 45 P/p would work to. The same with starboard if you prefer to explicitly state the tack: 45 S is the same as just 45.
3) The text on the 'Send' button will change depending on the type of course you have set. For example, if the new course involves a gybe, it will read 'Gybe'. If the new course is on the same tack as your current course, it reads 'Change Course'. When sending a delayed command (and when the client first starts) it reads 'Send Command'
4) There is a 'Next DC' countdown above the map top right. This requires the DCs to be listed in the client, which happens automatically every 20 minutes anyway
5) Most time related function (ie predictor compute and wx display) will now use apply the difference between server time and your local PC time - to improve accuracy an not be so reliant on you having a PC clock accurate to the second all the time.
6) You can elect to display the wind using Wind Barbs instead of Arrows. These have the advantage of showing speed more readily, and also the direction toward low pressure. They are, of course, rounded to 5kn increments (but coloured the same as the arrows) - and display as circles in under 3kn TWS, so you will need to use arrows still in the very light conditions. There is an Option to select between barbs and arrows.

These are all quite minor really - and are designed to either improve display accuracy, or help prevent mistakes when entering courses.

I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__
Great!
Regards and compliment
Agage, I think you are too modest - these "minor changes" are great enhancements to what is already a world class virtual sailing site
Keep up the good work - these "tweaks" work for me

There seems to be no limit to the clever, convenient enhancements you keep adding. Your Optimum Angles tool saves me a lot of computing time, many thanks (and my wife says thanks too!)

The Beagle in the Azores 2024

And west the Beagle went one final time to round the Cape of Good Hope on May 31 1836. Ashore, Darwin met up with the Astronomer Royal, Herschel, who just happened to be in South Africa at the same time mapping the southern skies. After sounding out his many ideas on evolution and extinction with Herschel, the Beagle now sailed north, stopping briefly in St Helena, Ascension and Brazil, and the Cape Verdes again, to reach the Azores on September 19, 1836. Fitzroy and Darwin at this stage were in a hurry to get back to Britain, but online in 2024 we will stay a little longer to explore this final remote archipelago in our virtual Tall Ship Class B Beagle, 630nm round and about the islands, minding as always in these waters not to bump into any large cetaceans!

Lake Victoria Sprint 2024

Welcome to Lake Victoria, home of the final sprint of Q4 and 2024. This Saturday we will sail our Lasers from Kaazi to Entebbe - 18 odd English miles in a cooling breeze, however slight it might be. Friends there will host an end of year BBQ of Luwombo, Muchomo, Matoke, and other delicacies. We will all sleep well after that. Now that the year is done relax and take in some sights like the Botanical Gardens and National Zoo. Enjoy the holidays and rest, 2025 sprints are a month away.
