An "honorable loser" prize is being introduced in Practice Races.

This reward, called "G-Scow" (Garbage-Scow), will be assigned to the last finisher of every practice race. Garbage-Scow's mission is to clean the sea behind the race. Being last makes it easier.
At this point, we draw attention to the fact that becoming part of G-crew is an HONOR, not a punishment. (Look at your hometown when there's a trashpickers' strike, you'll understand)

G-Scow Prize was created with Lord Kipling's poem "IF" in mind, we invite you to read it and meditate.

Rules
To deserve the prize, one should follow some very simple rules :

Rule 1 : One should start within the first minute after KABOOM.

Rule 2 : One should try to win the practice race.
Rule 2bis :Any violation of Practice Race Rules would result in disqualification for G-Scow Price.

Rule 3 : One should finish less than 20 minutes after the winner.

Rule 4 : One can not be awarded G-Scow if one is also Top 5. In other words, G-Scow will be awarded only when there are at least 6 finishers.

Rule 5 : There can be only one. If 2 boats or more finish in the same update, then G-Scow shall not be awarded.

Rule 6 : Because the concept is not easy to conceptualize. And because GS has to be deserved, a racer's first three participations in PR can not result in a G-Scow reward. Said new racer can declare oneself eligible to GS and victory at any time before the third race.
Rule 6bis : To keep things balanced, these first three races can not result in a PR victory either.

Rule 7 : In order to keep the command chain unbroken, GS will not be awarded if the result was to be a missing link in the command chain.

Rule 8 : Exemption : At any time before the start of any race, any Practice Racer can ask to be uneligible for GS by declaring "I'm interested neither in victory nor in sea cleaning".
Therefore, said Practice Racer will not be awarded any reward for said race. Neither GS nor podium. (A status of "G-Rogue" is under discussion, but not yet precisely defined)


G-Scow Price consists, after a very warm welcome from the remaining chatters, in the publication of the winner's name below the Top 5 list.

According to the number of G-Scows, a rating will be applied, based on Royal Navy ranks during Napoleonic War :

NB : This regulation is still under discussion, therefore still subject to amendments.

Hello,

Somewhere, somehow, I heared that in some race in I think NZ/Aus there is a trophy for the boat that finishes just 1 place before last?

Arthur - when we raced to Fernando do Noronha in the ReFeNo Rally we had a Sea Turtle for the last/second last :-)

I think the garbage scow rules should be reversed. When you're last only ONCE, you become the LORD HIGH ADMIRAL----but after many 'lasts' you work your way down past 'Boy Seaman' to "LANDLUBBER".
In every other human endeavor, you work your way UP---here you should work your way DOWN---perhaps all the way to SEWAGE LAGOON CLEANER......We all need 'something' to aim for!!!!
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.

Hehe, Wet ! What do you believe ?
Garbage-Scow is not for amateurs ! You can't go up the ladder this easily !
It took me 3 weeks just to get my enlistment as Landsman. Competition is tough ! At leaste much tougher than one could think at first glance... :-)

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau


You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
