	Thanks RC for the effort. The "Route du Rhum" is starting at the Oct. 31. - one of the most important ocean races. I am wondering why its not on the schedule. I think SOL races parallel to IRL races are the best opportunity to get new user involved. my 2 cent Stu/Berth

	StuArt - we may well sail from Brittany to the Carib at some stage but as you may recall from the Irish Rock episode back in 2009, SOL has to be very careful not to tread on the toes of any sponsors or race committees who would defend their brands/copyrights with litigation. If you or anyone else has contacts with the organisers of offshore races (prestigious/globally-known or not) that SOL can buddy-up with, as we did with Stamford Yacht Club for its Vineyard Race recently, then such races will always get a high focus!!!

	Hi Joanne, Well I remember vaguely the Irish Rock episode :o) But: all ocean races now have sponsors and it doesn't stop us from following them in SOL (VOR etc). I just think, that the "Brittany to Carib Race" is a MUST on the offshore race calendar - they expect another 200 000 visitors in St. Malo So we should do it simultaniously. When we can attract just the ppl who already sailed in SOL, it would be a success, don't you think? ) regards Stu/Berth

Unfortunately it is precisely for this reason, namely sponsorship, that SOL is stopped from running IRL ocean races at the same time/course as they are being run. There are huge sums of money involved with brands/marques closing out mega-publicity-deals with race organisers thereby locking out anyone not party to those deals on pain of litigation. SOL is currently a small, sociable, honorable organisation that seeks to work within the rules and, as was shown with the most recent Vineyard Race, has a superb niche product that appeals to on-the-ground racing organisations. We need more SOLers who belong to clubs that race offshore to do as Chaos did and invite their club to buddy-up" with SOL for specific races. In the meantime, however, without permission for SOL to race the big name races at the same time as they are run, we have to be careful when and how we run similar courses. --- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2010-09-19 10:35:16 ---

	I've made a quick check with a lawyer friend, and he is not at all convinced about "same time - same route" is any ground for litigation. However use of "branded words" is. Whatever is in the "public domain" is safe to use, such as global geography, utc... Just my 0.02$ worth.

	Hi. We all remember the Irish-rock episode. The problem that time was the unauthorized use of protected brand names. From that point in time SOL has been, and will continue to be, careful and considerate in terms of naming races. However SOL is not by any means scared of racing between locations in the geography where others, IRL or virtually, also race. Until proven wrong SOL is of the opinion that it is totally ok for anyone to race "similar time-similar route" as IRL-races. No-one has ever raised any legal aspects regarding this. However I do want to point out that if SOL administrators (Godesses etc) do not see that a certain race fits the calendar it is up to the community to argue and be sugary ) Happy sailing /Jakob ...one of the guys behind the game...

	StuArt - Super clarification from jakob and Svein which appears to make a compromise possible YAY So... lets start our "Ron Cazar Race" on Monday 1 November at 1800utc. Starting the race on 31 October will not be possible - the calendar for that day already has the Boston-Newport timed race running, Mistli's Birthday BBQ dash (it is really her birthday!) through the Swedish Archipelago AND the Barentsz Run up to Svalbard!!! We do need to choose a boat-type though - there are several single-handed multihulls entered in the Route du Rhum so... what do you propose. Also..we will have to push back our global ocean series for the duration of Ron Cazar + 1 week so does anyone have a sense of how long this new race will take please? --- Last Edited by RainbowChaser at 2010-09-19 16:42:56 ---

	well - Svein and Jakob said, what I thought - might not be a problem when changing the names (we did it several time like the Caribbian Eight for example). The boat to use is the Class 40, no way around that. 44 entries is a statement. regards and thanks for picking up the discussion Stu/Berth

Round Greenland 2024

Just as Skip Novak was embarking for Kamchatsky, Amyr Klink also quietly slipped his Antarctica moorings and by now Paratii 2 has reached Reykjavik, where he invites you to join him on Leg 5 of our High Latitudes Series, a full 3650nm circumnavigation of Greenland. The course is clockwise round, so down the North Atlantic to Cape Farewell, then up the Davis Strait into Baffin Bay and on into the Arctic Ocean proper, where, hopefully and certainly virtually, Paratii 2’s special ice-breaker features will get us thorough the summer ice out onto the Greenland Sea and back to Reykjavik. Stay warm!
