DAY 7 – SANDOWN, IoW TO PEGWELL BAY, E KENT

Start: 1000utc
From: 50.65 / -1.16
To: 51.32 / 1.36

On the last day of practice matchracing the fleet that departed Sandown was a little smaller than before but with one new addition, chrissq. Winds were 12kts from the NE but due to back and strengthen and then veer and weaken so the approx. 112nm to Pegwell Bay should take about 10hrs altogether.

By 1200utc the fleet was spread across a front of 2.49nm and there was only 0.3nm in straight-line distance to go between #1 and #9!!

1500utc saw the main group 51nm (straight line) from Pegwell Bay, at this stage werner and newsartist were taking a more central-Channel course, and chrissq and pc were a few nm behind. As pc had started 15mins late, that he had closed the gap so well was remarkable.

1730utc and the fleet is not nearly so spread. While pc is about 28nm from the finish (straight line dtg) and werner and newsartist can be found steaming up the Channel, the main “gaggle” who are sailing very tightly together are about 27nm (crows flight) from Pegwell. Vic has said that one of the most uncomfortable night moorings he ever experienced was at Pegwell – here's hoping this practice fleet have a more enjoyable time before race day dawns!

1830utc – what a difference an hour makes. The fleet is now split – offshore are Scott and Vic followed by woody55 and werner, and close inshore are pc, robert and batchg while Rainbow is placed between these two groups. News is now closer to France than England and chrissq has headed France-wards – as nothing has been heard from this SOLer it may be that they were only coincidentally at Sandown for the start this morning.

Just after 2100utc the winner of today's race, batchg, romped into Pegwell Bay, closely followed by Vic and the Siamese Twins (robert and Scott). The rest of the fleet arrived thereafter.

After seven days of informal matchracing, the fleet are now running to the Start Line - whoever is closest by 1230utc on 7 February will be the winner!

The results for the 7 days racing were scored according to the new 2010 F1 points system and the totals just simply added up - those who raced in fewer races obviously got less points! - and are as follows:

Africa by Sea - Tangier to Abidjan


Whatever about pharaoh Necho II’s Phoenician expedition of the 7th C BCE, the Carthaginian Hanno the Navigator with more certainty sailed south from Tangier to explore the West African coast two centuries later, but how far he got is a matter of more conjecture. However, if he did the 2300nm to today’s Ivory Coast he would have found little there other than good shelter in the vast lagoons behind the dunes, much the same as today, excepting the highly industrialized port of Abidjan. Not a great haven for a stop-over but let’s take the 90ft Monohull anyway.

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
