And on which port ? 5010?

In the NavMon screen I see at the left Virtual Ports A,B,C.

C is closed. com1: and com2: are connected but show [no data]. I think the results on the dials on the right are coming from another source. Seen your QtVlm screen I think they come in NavMon over your local internet ip: port 5010 too.

If you are using brainaids NMEA proxy you should use com3: port:5010

In your QtVlm settings you should try to uncheck the udp: port 1 and port 2 and in TCP: check server 1;and for ip-address use what you now have in udp: port 2

if you use autoGribLoader and have left everything unchanged use the same as above.

Should work!

Maybe if you want to use UDP you have to find a way in NavMon to send the nmea data to UDP port2.
I do not know how to do that.

Your suggestions have helped a lot. I have ignored the COM ports and just used the network info..... NMEA data is now showing in qtVlm!

Now I need to find some time to play with it.
Is there a better source of info for my next steps?

That article was written by <schakel>. At the time of writing QtVLM and BWR both used a com: port to read NMEA data.

NavMon was used to create a virtual com port that you could connect to in BWR and QtVLM.

Since then QtVLM has included it's own tcp/ip NMEA connection.

Only for BWR you still need to create a virtual com port.

I don't often fire up QtVLM but enjoy keeping my hand in with it. I just started routing in SWR and when I uploaded the Grib and zoomed out I spotted an odd "rash" of red dots and lines on-screen - nothing to do with the Grib, just highlighted by it.

It would seem some kind of graphics-cache "thing" as the identical dots/lines appear irrespective of the grib I load.

Please can someone advise me on how to remove these random marks? It's not a major problem for me as I don't rely on Qt BUT ... they shouldn't be there.

No doubt there is some cache I should have been clearing and haven't!

I am running WIN7 on an HP Pavilion laptop and I keep Qt reasonably up to date (i.e., responding to the on-screen advisories of new versions most of the time!). When I update Qt I usually overwrite the contents of the Qt folder which is located on the C Drive in ProgramFiles.

I do not know what you already have tried to clean that screen.
Deleting all of qtvlm and do a clean install would surely give you that clean screen.
Would help if you write down beforehand the configuration adaptations you made made different from the default in <QtVlm><Configuration>. Saves a lot of reinventing all the config-wheels later on.

And you could try beforehand in
<QtVlm><Export qtVlm data> to export whatever you chose there to Export (to qtVlmExport.zip) the data you want back when you have done a clean install.
Do not forget to put first qtVlmExport.zip on/in a different place then the QtVlm folder you are going to delete.

In the newly installed QtVlm you choose <QtVlm>< Import qtVlm Data> and find you exported data. And maybe the random dots are gone now.

That's all I can think of.

Thank you, whoever is anonymously posting as sol! It really would be helpful if you would post as yourself :-)

I am doing a clean install, having first deleted the original folder on C:/ which has been around for several years!

Now I'll wade back through here and see what changes I need to make as, stupidly, I forgot to make a note of the Sailonline "preferences" etc. before visiting here and seeing your advice on what to do! <eyeroll>

That's very easy to solve. Pls follow this steps:

1 - Left Click one time on the top/right side boat - it will appear a new Window on the left side with the "Position" menu;

2 - Just click on "Reset Trace"...

et voliá, tous les lignes rouges went.

I have in fact completely reinstalled, but as the red line would highlight when my cursor was on it, I figured there had to be a way to delete it!

Your instructions worked perfectly.

There is obviously heaps of functionaly in QtVLM that I know nothing about :-D

Whatever about pharaoh Necho II’s Phoenician expedition of the 7th C BCE, the Carthaginian Hanno the Navigator with more certainty sailed south from Tangier to explore the West African coast two centuries later, but how far he got is a matter of more conjecture. However, if he did the 2300nm to today’s Ivory Coast he would have found little there other than good shelter in the vast lagoons behind the dunes, much the same as today, excepting the highly industrialized port of Abidjan. Not a great haven for a stop-over but let’s take the 90ft Monohull anyway.

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
