You are speaking about VMG or VBVMG?

VMG calculations in qtVlm are rounded to the nearest degree, if I remember well.

Sebensa is simply referring to the angle a that gives the maximal/minimal value for boatspeed(a)*cos(a). If it's rounded to the nearest degree, QtVLM can be off by enough-to-loose-some-distance in some cases. If you want integer VMG angles, I would suggest you calculate the VMG=boatspeed(a)*cos(a) for the two nearest integer values of the optimal angle, and choose the one with the best VMG. This will be at least as good as rounding to the nearest integer value.

In short, VBVMG consists in doing ortho when possible, and polar best-VMG-Wind when it is not.

We have the same formula for VMG (hopefully). The values are precalculated with a precision of 0.1 kts for TWS and 0.1° for TWD.

I have an enhancement request. Would it be possible to automatically delete route waypoints that are "passed"? For a route that is connected to the boat, a waypoint is considered "passed" when the angle between boat COG and the bearing to the next waypoint in the route exceeds 90 degrees. That is, you are now going away from the waypoint, and no longer towards it.

The reason I ask is that quite often, I find an older routing , after deleting passed waypoints and re-optimising, is faster than a newly created one. If you have six or seven routes alive, it takes quite a while to update them all with each new Wx.

Good afternoon.

A small issue with Grib files merging.

I’ve loaded in Slot 1 the Grib file “TEcnLLTTOoSYmtRzKDl0e75I4HAjqDApvb6.grb” and in Slot 2 the Grib file “TEcnLLTTOoSYmtRzKDl0e75I4HAjqqDApvx.grb”.

After I’ve merged the two files in the file “GRIB MARINE, 07.01.2017.grb”.

If I load separately both files in Slots 1 and 2 I get it correct.

But if I load the merged file, only the lower part of the (merged) Grib is shown.

What is the problem?

Good afternoon.

Last qT version (5.4.7) when we close it, it crashes (with or without GPS on).
It is an issue that already happened. After it was solved and, came back again on the last release.

Any suggestion to avoid this, pls.

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
