Commentary

Another ARQ3 race behind us. This time the Celtic Sea was kind to our crews and didn't show its fangs. The wind gods also took care of stable weather. All this meant that the race practically took place at the very beginning before entering the open water behind Pointe du Raz. WRmirekd gradually built up his advantage over extremely dangerous opponents rafa, mb007 and FreyjaUSA. WR probably finished his IRL cruise and started to rebuild his position after the weak previous stage :-). Congratulations Gentlemen!

Halifax to Hooper Bay 2024

And now it’s Autumn in the Arctic, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. Having receded all summer, ice is starting to return to the numerous straits and bays of Canada’s North West Passage. High time then to set off on our last leg of the High Latitudes Series from Halifax in Nova Scotia to Alaska’s Hooper Bay. It’s 3850nm and we need to hurry, so we’ll take the Pelagic 77!

The Beagle in Tahiti 2024


Leaving the Galapagos behind, the course was west again, and by November 15th the Beagle reached Tahiti. Like Gauguin, sixty years later, Darwin found the natives, recently Christianized, pleasant and intelligent, but unlike Gauguin, this did not persuade him or his captain, Fitzroy, to tarry long. Let’s have a sail-around in 2024 anyway; 640nm, as ever in the Class B Tall Ship HMS Beagle.
